The year in numbers: economic insights in business

KVK Figures and Trends provides valuable information on economic developments. Every year, KVK Bedrijvendynamiek (Business Dynamics) tells you how the economy has changed over the past year. The insights are based on data from the Business Register.

The data in the report is broken down by sector and province. This makes it easy to compare sectors and regions. The annual report also includes information on gender, age, and country of birth of (starting) entrepreneurs.

Historically low growth in Dutch business population in 2025

The growth in the number of business establishments in the Netherlands reached a historic low in 2025. The total number of establishments registered in the KVK Business Register on 1 January 2026 was 2,599,668. This is an increase of only 1% compared to a year earlier (2,579,735). This is the lowest increase in years.

The number of starters fell by 10% in 2025 compared to 2024, while the number of closures increased by 18%. The number of closures increased in all sectors. The increase in the number of closures was particularly striking among the self-employed (+19%), while the number of starters decreased by 13%.

The number of bankruptcies fell by 21% in 2025 compared to 2024.
