In the first quarter of 2025, the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce KVK recorded the sharpest rise in the number of businesses ceasing operations (referred to as ‘stoppers’) in 10 years. Together with a decline in the number of new businesses (‘starters’), this means a decline in the growth of the number of businesses. On 31 March 2025, there were 2,578,878 establishments registered in the KVK Business Register, which is still an increase of 1.4% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
The KVK Trend Report provides insight into the development of the number of business establishments, starters, stoppers, and bankruptcies in the Netherlands over the past 10 years. This edition compares the first quarter of 2025 with the first quarter of 2024. The report contains information about various business sectors and provinces. It also shows the proportion of businesses in the Netherlands that are zzp'ers (self-employed professionals without staff). In addition to these developments in business dynamics, the Trend Report also contains information about legal structures, gender, and age of entrepreneurs, and a number of economic indicators.
Note: the Trend Report is only available in Dutch.
