Cancellation button required for online shops

From June 2026, it will be easier for customers to cancel orders. You will need to put a clearly visible cancellation button on your online shop. This button allows customers to cancel their purchase or service fast and easily.

Make sure that there is an easy-to-find and clear button or link on your website by 19 June 2026.

To whom does this rule apply?

The rule applies to:

  • online shops that sell to
  • online services providers
  • businesses that sell via social media

How do you comply with the rule?

At the moment, customers often have to fill in a return form (model cancellation form). The cancellation button does not replace this form. It is an additional, easier way to use the reflection period.

You can decide for yourself what the button or link looks like, as long as it is clear and easy to find. If necessary, consult your website developer about the best place to position the button. Also explain to your customers how the button works.

Once customers have used the button, send them a message asking them to confirm the cancellation. Once they have confirmed, the 14-day period during which they can return the order begins.

European directive

The cancellation will likely have to be on your website by 19 June 2026. The Lower and Upper Houses of parliament still have to vote on the rule. But it is already certain that it will be enacted eventually: it stems from a European directive.Â
