Disability insurance is not yet compulsory for business owners. The government is working on a compulsory disability insurance scheme (AOV), which is expected to come into force in 2030. Until then, it is up to you to decide whether to take out disability insurance.

In this video, presenters Max and Lisanne explain in 1 minute what the compulsory AOV entails and what this means for you as an entrepreneur.

How the compulsory AOV works

Is the compulsory AOV coming into force? If so, you’ll pay a premium to the Netherlands Tax Administration. If you become unable to work for a long period, you’ll receive a basic benefit via the UWV.

The benefit amounts to 70% of the income you earned before you became unable to work, up to a maximum of 100% of the minimum wage. You will receive this benefit until you reach state pension age.

The compulsory AOV is not yet in force. However, it is wise to start thinking about how you would cope with a period without income if you are unable to work due to illness or an accident.
