Can I register with KVK as a zzp’er or freelancer?

You often hear people say that they have registered as a zzp’er or a freelancer with KVK, but this is not how it works. During registration, we only record your legal structure such as an eenmanszaak or a BV.

What do you need to arrange when starting a business?

Way of working

Zzp (self-employed professional without staff) and freelance are ways of working. They are not legal structures. Both terms imply that you work for various clients and carry out temporary assignments. As a self-employed person or freelancer, you can only accept assignments under the legal structures of eenmanszaak (sole trader) and BV (besloten vennootschap, private limited company). Once registered as one of these structures  you can start working as a zzp’er or freelancer. These terms mean the same thing, so you can decide what to call yourself.
