Do you trade frequently in crypto, stocks, or foreign money? In some cases, day trading activities mean you are an entrepreneur and must register with KVK. There are also rules and permits for day trading.
What do you need to do and arrange when starting a business?
Find out with the 'Personal to-do list' on Business.gov.nl. Answer the questions and see the steps that are important in your situation.
Day trading means that you buy and sell crypto, shares, or foreign money (currencies) on the same day. You try to make a profit from small price differences. Day trading is often a hobby or a way to earn extra money. You are then not an entrepreneur and do not register with KVK.
When must you register with KVK as a day trader?
As a day trader, you almost never have to register with KVK. You must register only in these cases:
- You trade for clients and receive money for it. In that case you are a broker.
- You start your own trading platform for day trading.
Are you starting your own trading platform? Then you probably also need a licence from De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) or Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM). And you will have to deal with the Financial Supervision (WWFT).

Additional rules apply to underage entrepreneurs. Check the step-by-step plan for starting a business as a minor.
Can you get rich with day trading?
Online, you see many success stories from ‘finfluencers’ about making money quickly through day trading. But is it really that easy? Usually these influencers do not tell you how much money they lost. And those expensive cars and villas in the background are often rented for the video. Day trading can be profitable, but you can also lose a lot of money quickly. For successful day trading, you need  (in Dutch), time, and a good plan. Consider in advance how much money you want to spend at most and when you will stop. Then stick to your limit.
