Step 3 of 5

Gain insight into your finances

To make an informed choice to continue or quit, you need to know how you are doing financially.

Create a financial overview

List the current financial situation of your business. Do this yourself or together with your bookkeeper, accountant, or a financial expert. An interim balance sheet with profit and loss accounts will help. Do you still have to repay tax debts from the corona period? If so, take this into account.

Determine viability

This financial overview gives you a first indication of whether your business is financially sound. This is called the viability of your business. Your business is viable if you can pay all your bills in the short and long term. And also the cost of your financing. Your business must also generate enough income for you, and you can make necessary (replacement) investments.

Five factors determine whether a business is fundamentally viable:

  1. You can expect a positive cash flow within 3 to 6 months. Your cash flow is the difference between your income and expenses in your business account.
  2. You have a good chance that your turnover will not drop much during the period you make changes.
  3. You do not have an outdated production process.
  4. You can reduce your costs.
  5. You know the developments inside and outside your business and respond to them.

Debts

Does the financial overview show you have problematic debts? These can make continuing your business difficult. The Step-by-step plan dealing with debts shows how to resolve debts and who can help.

Future check

Do not just look at figures from the past; look to the future. The Future Check (Toekomstcheck, in Dutch) of VNO-NCW and SME Netherlands gives you insight into your financial situation for the next twelve months.

In the next step, you will find organisations that can help you decide whether or not to continue with your business.
